Chalcatzingo, Morelos, Mexico Middle Formative Period- The site contains one of the most extensive collections of Middle Formative period (c. 900-500 BC) bas-relief stone sculpture outside of the Olmec Gulf Coast lowlands.
Monument 12 is nicknamed “El Volador” or the “Flying Olmec”.
The monument is located at the foot of a hill in the SW portion of the site. Looters chiseled the back of the carving away from the rock, apparently trying to remove and sell the piece on the black market. A portion of the top of the carving is missing or damaged.
