The stone altar designed by Ralph Adams Cram for Aisne-Marne Chapel is decorated with allegorical carvings, marble panels, and gilding. The medallion on the front features a pelican and her young, a traditional symbol of Christian sacrifice. An inscription reads “Peaceful They Rest In Glory Everlasting.” The upper section displays symbols of virtues including an owl for “Wisdom,” and scales for “Justice.”
Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial, near the city of Château-Thierry in Northeastern France, is being documented for the American Battle Monuments Commission by a team of Historic American Landscapes Survey architects and historians.
