Chimpanzees are great apes and one of our closest living relatives. The Smithsonian Institution’s Division of Mammals (http://vertebrates.si.edu/mammals/ (link is external)) houses many chimpanzees in its scientific collections. This specimen, USNM 481804 (http://collections.mnh.si.edu/search/mammals/?irn=7360750 (link is external)), is a male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) from Liberia. It was collected by D. A. Schlitter near Tars Town in Grand Gedah Province. The specimen weighed 102 lbs and had a total length of 725 mm. The hind tarsus length measured 230 mm and the ear notch length was 72 mm. This is a CT scan of the cranium of USNM 481804.These three-dimensional scans are made publicly available through the generous support of the Smithsonian 2.0 Fund, provided from the annual gifts of the Smithsonian National Board to the Secretary to use at his discretion (http://smithsonian20.si.edu/fund.html (link is external)), and the Smithsonian Collections Care and Preservation Fund.
