The 308 ft whaleback steamer Clifton was built in 1892 as the Samuel Mather by Alexander McDougal in Superior, Wisconsin for the American Steel Barge Company. In 1922 it was sold to the Clifton Steamship Company and renamed the Clifton. It was converted to a self unloader which probably made the vessel top heavy and caused its eventual sinking. In sank in a Lake Huron storm midlake in 1924 killing all aboard. It was discovered in 2017 by David Trotter and crew and was the only remaining whaleback steamer to be discovered. It apparently capsized hitting the bottom bow first as it lies on its side with a badly broken bow in 165 ft of water. The Clifton was the largest ship we have modeled at the time and took three divers Andrew Goodman, Jon Connolly and Ken Merryman four dives and the use of a DPV to cover the entire site, Andrew Goodman did the major portion of the site. The model was made from 6,498 30 and 24 megapixel images.
