More model informationThis carving depicts an unusual hammer-headed cross slab with a panel containing a saltire cross and four crosses. The stone was found with other early Christian carved stones at Kirkmadrine Church, Dumfries and Galloway.
The five crosses may reflect the ritual of setting up or ‘consecrating’ a new altar practiced in early medieval Irish church. As part of this ritual, a bishop would write the alphabet across the floor from corner to corner, forming a saltire or the early Christian symbol known as a ‘chi-cross’. This cross represented the spreading of the word to the four corners of the earth.
