Archaeological excavation of the footings of ‘Cook’s Cottage’, Great Ayton, North Yorkshire. The cottage was never actually lived in by Captain James Cook himself, rather it was built by his father in later life. Nevertheless it remains an important link to the man, and especially after it was taken apart and shipped to Melbourne where it stands today as a museum. Cook, with his associations around the North Yorkshire coast, is a hugely important local figure who embodies ideas of personal endeavour and British seafaring, and is a bond with Australia.
These remains were exposed in 2019 during works to the Great Ayton memorial garden. The outline of the cottage can be seen in the southern face of a surviving building. Details in images below.
