Copt Howe / Langdale Boulders are prehistoric carved rocks located in the Great Langdale area of Cumbria, England. The markings found on the stones have similarities to examples found in passage tombs, particularly those in the Boyne Valley, Ireland (dated to around 3000BC).
In June 2018, Prof. Richard Bradley and Dr Aaron Watson directed a 11 day excavation, opening 4 trenches. For further info see Dr Aaron Watson’s dig journal here: http://www.aaronwatson.co.uk/journal/2018/7/17/excavations-at-copt-howe-day-1-the-project-begins
This model shows trench 3 on day 9 (25/6/18) and was created from 15 photos captured whilst trying to avoid Moyra’s (archaeologist at work) head. Closer photography couldn’t be captured without impacting excavation....hence some holes in the mesh.
At this end of the rock, the carvers have utiliised natural features on the rock and carved rings around natural depressions. The later phases of the excavation also revealed stones placed around the base, similar to trench one.
