ca. 1900, Kraków, Poland Jagiellonian University Museum, Collegium Maius
A cryostat is a type of thermostat, i.e. an instrument that maintains the assumed, constant low temperature required in research. The presented cryostat is intended to operate at the temperature range between ˗190 and ˗250°C and constitutes one of two cryostats designed by Karol Olszewski. The small instrument was enclosed in a glass Dewar vessel mounted on a turned, wooden base. The thermostated cryogenic liquid was introduced into a glass test tube with a resistance thermometer placed inside. Circulation of the cooling agent (liquid air) was designed as a system of two, centrically located tubes.
