Dakota Unfinished Dugout Canoe Wreck, 21-HE-5573D Model
The Dakota Unfinished Dugout Canoe Wreck is Minnesota Archaeological Site 21-HE-557 and still remains in situ in Lake Minnetonka west of the Twin Cities. The wreck is 9.40 feet long and 1.30 feet in diameter - and the artifact is unfinished. All over the log small irregular slashes are the tool marks created by the maker during the bark removal process and score marks relate to where bits of the log would be removed to fashion the canoe. It is possible the Dakota Unfinished Dugout Canoe Wreck was constructed as early; however, C14 data and relative dating of the site strongly supports a construction date range of 1802-1850. Documented by Maritime Heritage Minnesota; initially located by volunteer Kelly Nehowig. Recorded using GoPro8 and GoPro10, processed using Agisoft Metashape.
