These three horns represent those barbarian tribes which had conquered Europe and which had adopted the primitive form of Christianity as opposed to that upheld by Papal Rome. These tribes were the Heruli, the Vandals and the Ostrogoths. These were uprooted as the Papacy grew to become a religio-political force.
