The term surrounding framework comes from to bind around, that is, to surround a structure with at least two-sided supporting framework. In the case of the half-timbered house, a support structure (consisting of uprights, frames and head struts) is erected around a building, the block room. This support structure has the task of relieving the block room from the load of the roof and, if necessary, of the upper floor.
