More model informationThe oil on canvas painting representing the Great Lakes routes normally taken by Detroit and Cleveland (D&C) ships was placed in the side-wheel steamer Greater Buffalo when built in 1924 by American Shipbuilding Company of Lorain, Ohio. In 1942 the ship was converted to the aircraft carrier USS Sable used to train US Navy aviators how to take off and land at sea. The painting was removed from the steamer when the ship was converted, and was donated to the State of Michigan’s maritime heritage collection by J.C. and Mary Lou Tunnicliffe in 2015. The artifact is currently undergoing curation at the Michigan History Center in Lansing.
