Disc-slide mount from the Welby Hoard3D Model
One of five disc-slide mounts from the Late Bronze Age hoard (ca. 1000-800 BCE) discovered at Welby. The hoard included a unique copper alloy bowl, horse harness fittings, a sword, and axes. While the axes, sword, and spearhead are of British design, other objects suggest continental influences or imports.
The Welby Hoard was unearthed in 1875 by a farmer digging a trench in a field. Only a portion of the hoard survived, as the farmer intended to have it melted down. Mr W. S. Barnes, a local resident, witnessed this and managed to purchase and save the remaining artefacts.
