This heart has a divided left atrium.
By definition this is a congenital cardiac malformation in which there is a partition that divides the left atrium into a posterior chamber that receives some or all of the pulmonary veins and an anterior chamber that communicates with the left atrial appendage and atrioventricular junction (usually the mitral valve).
In this heart the specimen is being viewed from the posterior apsect. There is a membrane in which an incision has been made. The membrane divides the left atrium into an anterior and posterior chamber. The pulmonary veins can be seen entering the posterior chamber. The posterior chamber also communicates with the left atrial appendage. The anterior chamber cannot be seen well in the scan but the anterior chamber communicates with the atrial septum and the mitral valve. This heart does have an interatrial communication with a defect in the oval foramen.
