Pre-Columbian, possibly Panama, Costa Rica, or West Mexico origin. From a donated collection by JE Moore, the piece is now curated at the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, Bradenton. Moore, who was a real estate specialist, collected numerous artifacts and objects. He settled in Sarasota, Florida in the 1920s from Illinois. Moore considered himself a recreational archaeologist and paleontologist, and donated most of his collected materials to the museum in the 1950s. This piece is thought to have come from excavations near Panama in the late 1920s.
This stout, well-fed dog figure has a slightly flared bowl atop its back. These type of vessels were often taken from shaft tombs and passed on to collectors. The Moore collection was donated to the then South Florida Museum in 1950.
