This is my submission for the DTC 335 Virtual Monument assignment. The inspiration for this work comes from my recent experiences in a variety of dystopian science fiction. I wanted to create a distinctly virtual monument that captures the cyclical nature of technological development and ruin present through history and as a major component of dystopian sci-fi. Each obelisk loosely represents a different phase of human development, from crude carvings to technological marvels. I experimented with the screw modifier to create the abstract sci-fi visualization of the “future” obelisks, and utilized the Blender cell fracture modifier and rigidbody simulation to capture the moment of collapse frozen in time. Although there are aspects of this monument that wouldn’t physically be able to exist, if it were real it would be meant to be viewed from the central platform, only allowing the viewer to see one or two of the obelisks at a time, mirroring the blinding nature of the current moment.
