The name durian is derived from the Malay languages word for duri or spike. There is over 30 Durio species, at least 9 are edible, and over 300 named varieties in Thailand. Durian has a musky gas smell and a sweet garlic flavor. The odor has led to the fruit’s banishment from hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia.
