Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious lawbreakers, including “Slick Willie” Sutton and “Scarface” Al Capone. It was designed around 1823 by architect John Haviland in the model of a panopticon or radial prison. From the central guard room, a single person could survey prisoners in all eight radial directions. This model shows how the prison appeared from 1829 to 1877, before additional cellblocks filled the green spaces.
