The thousands-year-old walls of the Navarrese temple of San Miguel of Aralar preserve an exceptional jewel that alone would deserve the attraction of any visitor. It is the enamelled altarpiece of Santa Maria (https://www.sanmigueldearalar.org/el-retablo-de-esmaltes/#joya-s-xii), a medieval art masterpiece, made by the best goldsmiths and enamellers of Limoges of the XII century especially for this sanctuary, which denotes the attraction and importance that San Miguel has had for the Christian people.
Today, the altarpiece is at the head of the presbytery of the sanctuary. In the past it was an altar frontal, and probably responded to a gift that the King of Navarre, the bishop or another powerful personage made to the sancturary.
