Ephesos | Ancient Grey Marble Quarry3D Model
In the area of Abu-Hayat, there is a small grey marble quarry, small in size, was in use during the Roman period and most likely was abandoned and not in use again after that. The recent investigation of the quarry showed indications that it was in use as a small sarcophagus production centre. Throughout the quarry, there are many tool marks on the solid rock as well as abandoned marble objects (broken sarcophagus, unfinished olive press etc.). The main characteristics of the quarry are the grey colour with some lighter greyish white variations, coarse grain size, and recrystallization of some marble areas among the marble blocks. Extraction has already reached a depth of nearly 10 meters in the S SE side of it. The deposit extends along all sides, but natural fissures, in different directions, break the continuity.
