More model informationStanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, England; ~200,000 years old.
This magnificent left lower jaw belongs to an extinct species of lion: the European cave lion (Panthera spelaea). It was excavated from river gravels near Stanton Harcourt in Oxfordshire. The tooth size shows that the lions roaming Oxfordshire’s open grasslands 200,000 years ago were as large as, or even a little larger than, fully grown male lions found in Africa today. The lions may have grown large in response to the particularly large body sizes of their prey (horse and bison) at this time.
