An Armstrong RML Cannon from 1867 explodes on firing due to age… not exactly! This cannon was built in 1867 and was part of the Point Gellibrand Battery built to defend Melbourne.

This however shows what can go wrong when trying to reconstruct an object in 3D! Incorrect positioning of the camera and a lack of data from the top of the cannon has lead to the apearence of the cannon exploding!

As well as being used for coastal defence these cannons were also the primary armament on smaller British ironclad battleships and secondary armament on larger battleships during the 1860’s.
