A 3m high, 10m wide acrylic object resembling an eye, public art by Yoshiko Miyashita. Lighting is built into the interior. Located at Shinjuku Station, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. This public art was created in 1969. Installed in the basement of the Shinjuku Subaru Building, it has been described as “the most eye-catching public art in town.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 and the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the lights were turned off to save electricity, but they were switched from fluorescent to LED lighting and reopened in February 2015.
However, Odakyu Electric Railway, the owner of the site, responded that it would be preserved in its current state for the time being, and announced the launch of the “Menouye Project”, an experimental site for the senses, using the ground area above the “Shinjuku Eye” in October 2020.
