P&O Ferrys launched a project to build a new state of the art hybrid engined European push me-pull you roll on roll off ferry just before COVID. Although the intended operational date was 2023 - this is likely to be delayed a bit. The proposed ferry will be ( at 230 metres) the largest ship ever to sail between Dover and Calais and promises carbon cuts of up to 40% with technological capacity to absorb future engineering to run on a zero emisisons basis. The contract was announced in early 2020 to ABB and to be built in China at the Guangzhou Shipyard.
