Nikolay Vladov-Shmirgela (September 4, 1911 – July 28, 1999) was born in Shumen. He studied law at Sofia University and in the meantime five semesters at the Academy of Arts. His teacher is Prof. Marin Vasilev, one of the founders of sculptural art in Bulgaria. While still a student, his name appeared for the first time in the newspaper for literature, criticism and art “Worker’s Literary Front”. He published stories under the pseudonym Shmirgela, and signed his drawings and sculptures with the initials ShM. In 1931, he participated in the founding of the “New Artists” Society, which, although it existed only until 1944, played an important role in the development of Bulgarian art. Shmirgela was its secretary for nine years, and one of its chairmen was Ivan Funev. For some time the two sculptures shared a common studio and influenced each other. The “new artists” are distinguished by their desire to make art more closely related to the reality surrounding man and his emotions. See more at: www.urbanscans.com
