Figure of a Saint 18th c. Unknown sculptor
The full-length sculpture of a saint in a contrapposto pose is expressively depicted with his arms outstretched. Pierced by a wave of tension, his body is shown in a graceful position. The saint’s ascetic face, with its sharp features, expressive eyes, barely closed eyelids, prominent cheekbones and sunken cheeks, is full of expression and inner content. Unruly curls of dishevelled hair and long strands of beard frame the man’s head. A long tunic wraps around the man’s body, exposing his feet. The monumental folds of the garment, formed by geometric planes, create light and shadow effects that enhance the emotionality of the image, and the dynamic, theatrical pose of the saint gives the image emotional expressiveness.
