This fire brick is from HMS Velox, which sank in 1915 after hitting a German contact mine near the Isle of Wight.
HMS Velox was originally called Python by her builders, Hawthorn Leslie and Company. However, after two similar ships, HMS Viper and HMS Cobra, were lost in accidents, the Navy did not use snake names for warships again and commissioned Python as Velox (latin for ‘swift’).
The brick made up part of the coal burning furnace that heated water for the Parsons Marine steam turbines, a fairly new, but important form of technological advancement when Velox was launched in 1902.
