The First African Baptist Church served as the hub of the Settlement on Cumberland Island in Georgia. The community started to form in the 1890s when the northern part of the island became available for purchase. This area was later named the Settlement. Freed people bought five acres of land that was subdivided into 50 x 100 ft. lots. They then constructed homes and built the church in 1893. Many of the church founding members were previously enslaved on the Rayfield, Greene, and Stafford Plantations on Cumberland Island until 1862, or were their descendants. The church became famous for being the location of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s wedding in 1996. https://www.townandcountrymag.com/the-scene/weddings/a7693/jfk-jr-carolyn-bessette-wedding-georgia/.
