I wanted to see if I could simulate portals without actually having portals. One of my early concepts was basically a donut with segmented skyboxes. It worked pretty well in VR, so I iterated on the idea, coming up with unique environments, ambient audio effects and interactive set pieces. It took a bit of trial and error, lots of texture baking and dozens of test runs in VR to work everything out, but I’m really happy with the result.
The world has been well recieved and even made it into VRChat’s showcase. Speaking of, the VRChat version has more places to explore, higher fidelity effects and shaders; and there are a bunch of interactive elements to find. I’d encourage anyone who plays to check it out: https://vrchat.com/home/world/wrld_e933926e-debb-4710-9e70-be164359fce4
