The former Gerhart-Hauptmann-Schule (GHS) in Kreuzberg was occupied by refugees protesting against the government’s restrictive asylum policy from 2012 to 2018. The protest attracted nationwide attention. In January 2018, the school was evicted. The building has been empty ever since. Nevertheless there is still evidence of the squatters, such as wall paintings, traces of fire, broken locks or the furnishings of the washrooms. In order to preserve the history, the formerly occupied areas of the building were documented using laser scanning and photogrammetry. The 3D digitization was accompanied by oral history interviews and archival research. A project by FHXB Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum, in cooperation with Berlin University of Applied Sciences, Department III – Photogrammetry Laboratory; technical advice and data preparation by Pablo Dornhege and Franziska Ritter (digital.DTHG); in dialogue with International Women Space (IWS). Sponsored by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe.
