Fossil Pearl (NHMW-Geo 1967/0752/0000)3D Model
3D scan of the largest ever found fossil pearl with a diameter of nearly 5 cm. This pearl comes from a Fossil Oyster Reef at Stetten in Lower Austria. The pearl was formed by a giant mussel (Perna aquaticus) as a defense against the attack by a piddock, which started to penetrate the shell of the mussel. This reef formed 16.5 million years ago during the Miocene.
This Fossil Pearl can be found in Hall 9 in Showcase Number 53 of the NHM Vienna.
