Butternuts are now restricted in their distribution to North America, but they were formerly present in Europe as proven by fossil nuts of the species.

Fossil walnuts (Juglans bergomensis) from the Florida Museum of Natural History Paleobotany and Palynology collection (UF Paleobotany 4791). Collected from the Fagebau Frechen, Germany. Pliocene in age.
