Fountain of St. Margaret | Margaretenbrunnen
In 1552 emperor Ferdinand I. ordered the construction of a water pipeline. This pipeline provided the imperial court and a lot of other facilities in Vienna like monastries, barracks and palaces with drinking water. The water derived from seven springs that were located in the area of todays 5th district of Vienna. In 1829 emperor Franz I. allowed the residents of Margareten to take water from the pipeline. So in November 24, 1836 the fountain of Saint Margaret of Antioch was inaugurated and provided the community members with drinking water. Up until 1843 it was the only public source of drinking water in the area. In 1886 the fountain was moved 20 meters to its current location. On this occasion a new pedestal was built (Alois Hauser). The sculpture of Saint Margaret who is defeating a dragon was created by Johann Nepomuk Schaller and is made from lead.
