Franklinite octahedrons on matrix3D ModelNoAI
Locality: Franklin, New Jersey, USA
No.: 5324
Size: 5.8 x 5 x 1.8 cm
Formula: Zn(II)Fe(III)2O4
Description: The Spinel supergroup includes minerals with a spinel-type structure, with the general formula AD2X4. It includes oxides (Oxyspinel group - O2- anion) and sulfides (Thiospinel group - S2- anion), and more rarely selenides, silicates and germanates. The Oxyspinel group can be divided into these subgroups: Spinel subgroup and Ulvöspinel subgroup (with divalent cations in the A site, and trivalent cations in the D site: A2+D3+2O4). Even Magnetite (Fe2+Fe3+2O4) and Chromite (Fe2+Cr2O4) belong to Spinel subgroup.
Franklinite is named after the locality of Franklin, New Jersey, where it is found. Crystals are usually octahedral, black, and with a metallic luster.
