French Saintonge Jug (SOTLS : A1973 1024)3D ModelNoAI
A French late 13th century Saintonge ware jug from the excavations in Cuckoo Lane, Southampton. The jug has a light amber glaze and is decorated with a bird and a shield. Saintonge ware is some of the brightest and most colourful pottery maufactured in Medieval Europe and the fine collection in Southampton is a testament to its successful maritime trade during this period. The jug is part of the collection of Southampton Cultural Services (SOTLS : A1973.1024). It was found in the famous Pit 14 group from Cuckoo Lane, where many of the most intriguing Medieval Southampton artefacts have been recovered.
The jug is on display at Sea City Museum in the Gateway to the World gallery: https://seacitymuseum.co.uk/exhibitions/gateway-to-the-world/.
The jug has been laser scanned as part of a collaborative project between Southampton Cultural Services and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton.
