More model informationThis a cross section of an edge area of Panel 11 in the Bear Rock Art Alcove of the Palatki Heritage Site, NW of Sedona Arizona. The outermost exposed section of the Permian SS on which Sinagua and Archaic petroglyphs and pictographs were created has increased iron content assumed to be due to enhancement of iron rich ground water blocked by low permeability fine clastic fracture fill material which has subsequently been mostly eroded away. The fracture fill and iron enriched zone appear to be somewhat softer than the native sandstone and were preferentially used by ancient cultures for fine incised petroglyphs
