This 3D model of a head écorché was produced using photogrammetry, compiled in Metashape, and then edited in Zbrush. The hand-sculpted wax head focusses on the pathology of late-stage furious rabies. The muscles of facial expression are contorted to appear manic, which are visible as the skin is removed from half of the face. The larynx is highlighted and covering muscles peeled back, as patients suffer from severely painful laryngeospasms. These can be a result of the hydrophobia the virus causes in order to prevent ingestion of water that would potentially wash away the virus-occupied saliva. The ‘froth’ at the mouth is a result of this, as the virus replicates in the visible salivary glands to aid transmission. The patient is also sweating profusely as the body attempts to fight the virus.
