Galleta Meadows Metal art sculpture of scorpion and grasshopper.
The Galleta Meadows Metal Sculptures are a remarkable series of over 130 large-scale metal sculptures located in the Borrego Springs area of California’s Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The sculptures were commissioned by Dennis Avery, a philanthropist and landowner of the Galleta Meadows Estate. Avery envisioned transforming his property into a vast outdoor gallery, and in the early 2000s, he collaborated with artist Ricardo Breceda to bring this vision to life.
Breceda, known for his expertise in metalwork, crafted sculptures that depict prehistoric animals, desert wildlife, and mythical creatures. One of the most iconic pieces is a 350-foot-long sea serpent that appears to rise and fall through the desert sand. The sculptures were created using welded steel, with intricate details that bring a sense of realism to each piece. They represent various eras of natural history and mythology, drawing visitors from around the world.
