A bronze coin of Clement VIII, Pope between 1592-1605. This coin was found within a pot in the fireplace of the structure shown here (https://skfb.ly/oLAJw). 36 were recovered from the pot with coins minted between the late 16th and late 17th centuries from Scotland, England, Ireland, Spain, the Spanish Netherlands, France and the Papal States represented.
This coin weight would have origionated in the Papal States in Italy and may have been taken home to Glencoe by clan chief Alasdair Ruadh “MacIain” MacDonald of Glencoe during travels in his youth, or brought home by a member of his clan.
The model was produced by Christopher Viney and Conor Fraser of the Museums in the Metaverse Project at the University of Glasgow, in collaboration with the Landscapes of Glencoe and Rannoch Team in Archaeology (UofG). The coins will be studied by Jesper Ericcson of the Hunterian Museum (UofG).
