Cattle can only digest grasses due to fungus like these mushrooms that turn grass into proteins and sugars using White or brown” rotting fungus. Bacteria like yeast eat the sugars and convert them into more food. The spores for the mushrooms are carried by the wind onto grasses so that they are ever present in the environment. The mushroom are just the fruiting bodies of the fungus that was growing in the cow pie and being culutured in the gut of the cow. Digestion is a case of controlled fermention and rot is only a partial description. Things that are added to human foods inteneded to retard “spoilage” could be killing or harming the very living things that accomplish digestion.
