Graffiti Signature of Giovanni Belzoni - 1816
Ramesseum, Luxor, Egypt
Carved graffiti signature of Giovanni Belzoni, carved in 1816. This signature is believed to have been carved by Belzoni while undertaking work commissioned by Consul General Henry Salt. Salt commissioned Belzoni to obtain the upper half of the seated statue of Ramesses II, known as the ‘Younger Memnon’. This is now a centrepiece display in the British Museum’s Ancient Egypt collection.
The signature is carved to the rear of the lower half of the seated statue.
