Camlough Quarry is a disused quarry in private ownership on the eastern side of Camlough lake in Co. Armagh. It is significant to regional geology as quarrying works have exposed the relationship between the Slieve Gullion ‘ring-dyke’ intrusion & the country rocks, being the first one ever described in scientific literature (J.E. Richie in 1932). The quarry face has been given Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) status by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency for its importance to regional geology. This 3D model generated from a digital site survey is the best & safest way of exploring the geology of the quarry!
Mainly composed of Newry ‘Granite’ granodiorite intruded c400 million years ago at the end of the closing of the Iapetus Ocean. Approximately 60 million years ago, as part of the opening of the North Atlantic, a ring structure formed in what is now the Gullion region due to the collapse of the surface rocks above a magma chamber.
