Digging continued 660m from here until people reached the mining area in 1842.

The Handa Silver Mine is said to have been discovered in 807. In 1598, a development study was initiated and mining began in earnest in 1661. It was one of the greatest mines in Japan, but due to depletion of silver mine resources in 1864, a fire disaster in the mine in 1870 that resulted in many casualties, and In 1910, a nearby swamp burst its banks, causing extensive damage, mining operations were halted in 1950.
