Thomas Evans Haile and family moved from South Carolina to Gainsville in 1854 bringing with them 56 enslaved individuals. “Among them were William and Lousia Watts, Johnson and Maria Chestnut, Edmund and Charity Kelley and their young son, Bennet, and many others whose names are lost to time.” By 1860 Haile owned 66 enslaved people.
