Hanging Stone Rock on Ilkley Moor, West Yorkshire, is a split area of bedrock scattered with many carvings in the ‘cup and ring’ tradition. Saved from quarrying around 1865, this area of land now appears as a distinct knoll at the N end of the Victorian quarry. The western section of bedrock has two unusual cellular designs featuring broad shallow grooves, in addition to the usual cup and ring designs. Carvings on the weathered eastern section also include a cellular design and other motifs in the cup and ring tradition. A number of solution holes are also present. Sadly, this area has been prone to graffiti attacks over the years, with a recent example being recorded in 2012.
