9th-century High Cross now standing in the grounds of Kinnitty Castle hotel, County Offaly. Originally this cross may have stood at the Early Christian monastery of Drumcullen or Kinnitty. This cross is decorated with panels containing biblical scenes as well as a range of decorative motifs including interlaced knotwork. An inscription on the lowest section of the cross shaft on the southern face reads; ‘A prayer for King Maelsechnaill son of Maelruanaid. A prayer for the king of Ireland’. A second inscription on the lowest section of the cross shaft on the southern face reads; ‘A prayer for Colman who made the cross for the king of Ireland. A prayer for the king of Ireland’. This high cross was made in the 9th century by Colman for Máel-Sechnaill, son of Máel-ruanaid, king of Tara, and king of all Ireland who died in year 862. Text provided courtesy of Peter Harbison.
