This worked stone lintel is currently used as a bench by the East Lawn on the Hinton Ampner property. It is believed that the lintel might be the last remaining surviving fragment of the previous Hinton Ampner House.
The lintel has chamfered inner surfaces and the remains of a central mullion. The two outer ends show traces of tongued joints, designed to fit into grooved recessed of lower stonework, which supported the lintel. There is slight damage to one outer corner, probably caused by a vehicles accessing the carpark nearby.
The texture and appearance are as follows: Creamy colour (pearl cream) Sandstone with very small orangey silicious grains that are well-cemented within the material structure (refers to formation). Could be Wiltshire Saracen stone.
