There are 6 buttons down the front of the coat, with 3 buttons either side with accompanying button holes, suggesting that it was actually unisex. The material used is a black cotton with the garment then being lined with silk. On the cuff of either sleeve there is a British army cap suggesting that the ranking of the person who originally owned and wore the garment. There is a naval stripe on the left shoulder where potentially medals would have hung or further indication of where the gentleman ranked on terms of the navy.
