More model informationStanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, England; ~200,000 years old.
Fossils of wild horse (Equus ferus) are common in Ice Age deposits around the UK. 34 horse fossils were excavated from the 200,000-year-old river gravels near Stanton Harcourt in Oxfordshire. Limb bones, like this left metatarsal (the lower part of the hindlimb), allow us to reconstruct the size of animals from their fossils. The Stanton Harcourt horses were over 1.5 metres tall, noticeably larger than later Ice Age horses. The bison were also large at this time, and it’s thought that rich warm-climate vegetation allowed these herbivores to grow big!
