“Ichijoushi” (一戸建て in Japanese) emerged during Japan’s rapid economic growth in the 1960s as a type of detached single-family home, representing the initial ideal model of private housing in Japan. It typically consists of a small yard with a parking space, partially private roads, and a 2- to 3-story wooden building, with an area ranging from 40 square meters to 200 square meters.
Due to the frequent occurrence of earthquakes in Japan, most Ichijoushi are constructed with a wooden structure, which not only provides excellent seismic resistance but also allows for fast construction, often completed within 2 to 3 months. Additionally, the land underneath an Ichijoushi belongs to the individual owner, and some Ichijoushi even come with their own parking spaces and yards. Ichijoushi remains one of the most common forms of residential housing in Japan.
